Rust 2

This is my 2nd attempt, which I like better than the first ones. It's more planned, with the tyre iron wrapped in the middle, and nails laid out in a design.

My boss (of my day job) has brought me in some rusty stuff from his shed, including some large cogs. I've bought some more vinegar, so I'll see how those cogs turn out. Posted by Picasa

It has a great pattern and will the rust stay if this is overdyed or painted? just curious about "what if"

Interesting! What are you going to do with the cloth?

It's so funny that I'm meeting you today while you're posting about your rust dyeing experiments! I'm doing a workshop on it this weekend.

My overall impression so far (from studying the pieces of rust dying I've run across in blogland) is that more is better, unless you know how to control the 'ion bonding' etc in order to produce more effects - which I don't. I just hope it all works.

I love your quilt work, btw, particularly 'Monet's Hexagons.' Quilting is still very much a mystery to me.

It's really a neat pattern. I ended up with actual raised texture on a piece I rust dyed. I stuck in a plastic bag ( white vinegar) in the closet for 12 days while I was on vacation, & when I got home it was not only dyed, but bonded with these smoothe bumps. Very interesting stuff. I washed it in the washing machine, & none of it washed out.

That is well thought out Shirley. What will you be doing with them I wonder? You really inspire me.

I like these, Shirley - they make me think of prehistoric cave paintings...(don't know why - my brain must make weird associations!)
